JEEP GURU'S HOME
|
Legend known far and wide
War veteran and father to some.
Forced into everything
And yet still lives.
Strong enough to withstand weather
And yet vulnerable to nature.
Without the skills to survive
It sits alone.
Take control
You can go anywhere.
Objects seem small
When your seat is high.
Footing is achieved
With the correct choice of path.
In 1939 the US military needed a new vehicle to replace the motorcycle and the Ford model T. They got together 135 different car companies and got them to design and build this new vehicle. There were certain specifications for this. A payload of 600lbs, wheelbase under 75 inches, fold down windshield, vehicle weight under 1200lbs., and it had to have 4 wheel drive. Only three companies entered; Bantam, Willy-Overland, and Ford. Bantam produced the Blitzbuggy or "Old Number One." Then the Willys Quad and Ford with the Pygmy, which were the same as the Bantam truck. Willys won with their 60hp "Go-Devil" engine. Willys eventually renamed their Jeeps the MA and the MB. While Ford was called the GP and GPW. No one knows where the name "Jeep" came from. Some think it evolved from "GP." The GP actually stood for Government and the vehicle class, instead of "General Purpose." Many also thought they were named after Popeye's magical pet named Jeep, that could do anything. The CJ series started in 1945 with the CJ2A. CJ stands for civilian Jeep. Then the CJ3A and CJ3Bs were produced until 1968. Also known as flat fenders. There is a CJ4 but it is the missing link between the flatfendered CJ2 and 3 and the roundfendered CJ5. It was a prototype. The CJ5 came in 1954 as a civilian version of the M38A1 which came out in 1952. CJ5 was in production for almost 30 years. During the time of the CJ5 there was a CJ6 with a 101" wheelbase and later a 104." The 104" was later replaced with the CJ7. The 7 was one of the more popular Jeeps, longer wheelbase to accomdate the optional automatic transmission. Between 1981 and 1986 there was a long wheel base CJ8 that was called a Scrambler. A pick up truck version of the 7. In 1986 the 7 was replaced with the square headlight YJ, also known as the Wrangler. After ten years the Wrangler was redesigned again for the new TJ. The TJ comes with a new Quadra coil suspension and a redesigned 90's interior. Also it brought back the round headlights.
